Cod liver…pass the chianti and favas beans.

Tried my first cod liver tin!

This is wild caught smoked cod liver from an MSC certified fishery, and retails at only $4.50!!

This was part of my Omakase order from @rainbowtomatoesgarden, in which you set whatever price you want to spend (for me it was $50) and then have an email chat with Dan about your preferences, anything you absolutely do or don’t want included (no octopus for me thanks to the Octopus Teacher), and if you’d like fewer higher end tins or more lower priced tins to hit your $ amount. Then a magical box of mystery lands on your doorstep.

I can’t recommend this type of ordering highly enough. Especially once you’ve tried a few tins of your own choosing, it’s great for someone else to take the wheel and experience things that you would normally scroll right past. Like tinned cod liver.

Per the personalized notes that came with my order, “the oil in the tin is what is naturally expressed from the liver” meaning all that oil you see in the tin is cod liver oil that separates from the liver during the sterilization process. It’s full of Omega 3’s and vitamins A & D. Also that this is the “foie gras of the sea”. And yes it is.

Per usual the first time I try any tin I just do it with bread (toasted @5098bread sourdough in this case) and butter (omitted this time because of the inherent richness already partying in the can). On my second bite I added flaked salt which I preferred. Will try a dark fruited jam next time on the toast as well.

Truly a luxury product at an insane price.
